Almost every provider advertises “unlimited” Internet. But the word doesn't always mean the same thing. Here is how to recognize a truly unlimited plan, and the questions to ask before choosing.
Two main families of providers
In Quebec, there are the large telecommunications companies on one side and, on the other, independent providers, smaller and often closer to their customers. Club Internet belongs to this second family: a local team, two offices, in Montréal and Varennes, and someone who answers the phone.
What does “unlimited” mean?
A truly unlimited plan meets three conditions:
- no data limit: no monthly cap;
- no overage fees: the bill is the same, no matter how much you use;
- no slowdown at the end of the month: the speed stays that of the plan.
Six questions to ask a provider
- Is data unlimited on all plans?
- Is the advertised price the regular price, or a promotional price?
- Is there a contract, and a penalty if I leave?
- Do I have to buy or rent the modem? At what price?
- How much does installation cost?
- Who answers if I have a problem?
Club Internet's answers
- Yes. The nine speeds, from 6 to 450 Mbps, are all unlimited.
- It is the regular price. From $34.95 to $89.95 per month depending on the speed, and it doesn't change.
- No contract. You can cancel at any time. The fees that may apply around installation are explained in our cancellation policy.
- The modem is a free rental. It remains the property of Club Internet and must be returned to one of our offices at the end of the service.
- $50.00, one time only. It is free if you pay yearly.
- Our team, in English or French. By phone or at our offices, Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
